Geologists call the area that roughly includes
the Coachella and Imperial Valleys of southern California,
and the western half of the Mexicali Valley and the Colorado
River delta in Mexico, the Salton Trough. This region
of southern California and northwestern Mexico is an area
of intense geological activity. The Salton Trough is a
complex transition zone between the right-lateral motion
of the San Andreas transform fault system, and the northwestward
progressing spreading ridge complex of the Gulf of California
segment of the Eastern Pacific Rise.
