Boeing 727 Crashes in Laguna Salada

San Felipe, Baja, Mexico

Around 10: 00 am yesterday (April 27, 2012), a Boeing 727 aircraft, without passengers or crew, performed a forced emergency landing at Laguna Salada as part of an experiment by the National Geographic Channel, apparently for their series "Seconds from Disaster".

Photo from Elvigia.net articleIt was a remote-controlled emergency landing project, in which dummies with sensors were used to determine injuries that a human being could sustain.

Hundreds of cameras and sensors inside the aircraft will provide valuable information which may save many lives. The plane was guided by remote control while mid-air mechanical faults were induced.

Previously the plane made flights with test pilots aboard, who parachuted to safety prior to the emergency landing.

The landing area was near 80 kilometer of the road to San Felipe. Municipal, State and Federal police were on hand, as well fire-fighting teams.

The project was to have been performed on Thursday, but strong winds prevented this from happening.

The Boeing 727, registration XB-NPM, was delayed for a while at the Mexicali international airport, waiting for permission to carry out the landing.
