Parade of Lights - 2013

Another cool winter evening had pedestrians bundled up for this year's Parade of Lights. It required a vis-a-vis with the Tourist Office and a phone call by the girl behind the desk to discover the date and time of the event. As usual, no flyers or announcements were tendered to the public.

I don't know if it was the cold, or perhaps the lack of functioning car and truck heaters, but the short queue of lighted floats flashed past the assembled crowd like a Bullet Express train, leaving next to no opportunities to photograph the evening's celebrations.

After the rapid disappearance of the parade, no one seemed to know where it went or even if there was a possibility of its reappearing. A few people experimentally stood on the curb of the Malecon and their notion caught favor with other that were lingering about. Soon the sidewalk was lined with people, but a long wait produced no reward. I went for a hot chocolate at Rosita's and sat at a table not far from the curb, anticipating a comfortable Photo Op. Fifteen minutes later, the waitress told me the parade was flowing down the street on the other side of the building. I juggled the hot chocolate and camera aross the restaurant to find the tail end of it, not in the least diminished in velocity. I went back to the curbside table and a while later the parade, having ssomewhere shed half of its attractions, poured up the Malecon. The lead car mercifully stopped, probably to find a dropped bottle opener, and the two floats behind it were obliged to rein in their enthusiasm. A few photos were snapped, a few candies tossed from a truck and the 2013's Parade of Lights went out with a wimper.

At least the hot chocolate was good.
